SOUTH: SAN ANTONIO BOTANICAL GARDENS EXPANSION TOUR WITH THE ARCHITECT

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2019
San Antonio Botanical Gardens
555 Funston Place, San Antonio, TX 78209

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join us for a garden happy hour and learn about the LEED Gold expansion of the gardens and educational spaces from the architect's perspective. The expansion includes many green and sustainable features including active and passive water harvesting systems that irrigate native landscaping. The architecture for the project achieved LEED Gold. This 8.5 acre project sought to give the San Antonio Botanical Garden a new face and presence with the addition of:

Phase 1

  • New visitor center
  • Parking gardens
  • Classroom space
  • Culinary garden
  • Gift shop
  • Family adventure garden

Phase 2 (still under construction)

  • Event building
  • Administration building
  • Boardwalk
  • Outdoor event lawn

The plan was inspired by the history of the Garden as a quarry and one of San Antonio's first waterworks. Curving cast concrete walls guide visitors from the parking garden through an entry plaza and water harvesting garden, all while preserving views of the Lucile Halsell Conservatory by noted architect Emilio Ambaz. The Discovery Center and culinary gardens connect visitors the new event lawn, Conservatory and new Family Adventure Garden. The family adventure garden introduces children to the wonder of the Texas Hill Country and its precious water.

About The Architects

Ten Eyck Landscape Architects connect urban dwellers with nature and each other through landscapes. Their collaborative team works closely with architects, engineers, and ecologists to create historically-sensitive and socially, financially, structurally, and environmentally-sustainable landscaping. Their designs prioritize native plant communities, water harvesting technologies, and durable materials - artfully expressed through form, color, and texture.
